Fonds consists of correspondence, diary excerpts, working papers for a memoir, newspaper clippings and articles, draft and published copies of her writings, and other materials relating to Julia Grace Wales' participation in the peace movement during and after World War I, including the International Congress of Women at The Hague, 1915, and the Henry Ford Peace Expedition, 1915-1917; papers relating to her book, Democracy Needs Education (1942), her poetry, her writings on religious and other themes, and her career as a Shakespeare scholar; personal and posthumous items, publications, and other material. Photographs by De Tonge, John Trevor, J.A. Simons, Robinson Bury, of Julia Grace Wales at different ages, her family and with the 1903 "Donaldas" McGill Women Graduates.

Wales, Julia Grace, 1881-1957 : Julia Grace Wales, peace activist, writer and literary scholar, was born in Bury, Eastern Townships, Quebec, on 14 July 1881. She was educated at McGill University (BA, 1903) and Radclife College (MA, 1904), before moving to the University of Wisconsin, where she was a student and professor of English literature, specializing in Shakespeare (Ph.D., 1926).

Wales is best known for her work in the peace movement during World War I. While at Wisconsin she drafted a plan to bring the war to an end, "Continuous Mediation Without Armistice". Wales' plan was endorsed early in 1915 by the Wisconsin Peace Society, the National Peace Conference (Chicago), and the Wisconsin legislature. Wales was a delegate (representing the Wisconsin Peace Society) to the International Congress of Women, a peace conference held at The Hague in April 1915 at which The International Committee of Women for Permanent Peace (renamed the Women's International League for Peace and Freedom) was created.

Wales' plan was adopted as a resolution of this conference, and she then served as a member of the conference's embassy that took the continuous mediation proposal to European governments. After the International Congress of Women, Wales joined the Henry Ford Peace Expedition and was a member of the subsequent Neutral Conference in Stockholm. She returned to North America in 1917 to resume her academic career, but maintained an interest in the peace movement. She continued to publish articles on peace issues, and also one book, Democracy Needs Education (Toronto: Macmillan, 1942). Wales also wrote and published poetry and articles on religious themes. In 1947 she retired to St. Andrew's, Quebec, where she died on 15 July 1957.
