Biography/Administrative history:

Gourlay, William, d. 1867 : William Gourlay served in the British army from 1815 until he retired and came to Canada in 1836. When the Rebellion broke out in 1837 he offered his services to the government and was placed in command of the First Incorporated Battalion of Militia for Wentworth County. He served in this battalion from 1838 to 1843 and with the 12th Gore Regiment and 3rd Battalion of Wentworth until his retirement in 1852. He had attained the rank of colonel.

He died in 1867 at his home at Barton Lodge, Hamilton.
