Pelltier outlines a brief history of the Ottawa, a clan of the Algonquin Nation, which at one time occupied the territory of Northern Ontario, Michigan and Oklahoma. Pelltier talks about Manitoulin Island where he grew up and recalls the plentiful game and his hunting and trapping lifestyle on the Island. Other topics include the changes wrought on native culture by the non-natives and how the wintertime was spent listening to stories told by the elders. Pelltier relates a native legend, the tragic story of the turtle with moss growing from its back, told to him by an elder hunter, and discusses the legends of the mythical [Nanibush] who could transform himself into animals and people.
