Description:

Geodetic survey (Geodetic Service of Canada) in Ungava Bay in Canada's Arctic for which Thomas Henry Manning assisted in the determination of astronomical ground control for photosurveys. Opening scene of a large ship docked near shore. Shots of Inuit community hunting seal, polar bear and dolphin. Footage of: a survey party unloading RCAF CANSO and setting up camp (survey party travelled by aircraft and Peterhead boat); Ella Wallace Jackson or Jack, (Mrs. Manning) and Thomas Manning working with theodolite instrument; incidental views of North land, bodies of water, high cliffs and colony of sea birds; Inuit working on supplies, cutting up narwhal, hoisting dead polar bear aboard ship; and Inuit paddling kayaks and a one-mast coastal vessel. 1. The word Eskimo originally in the description was replaced by Inuit. ~2. In 1944, Thomas Henry Manning was a geographer and a biologist. He was loaned to the Geodetic Service to establish ground control for an aerial survey conducted by the RCAF. Ella Wallace Jackson or Jack, his wife, was appointed as his assistant the following year when the survey was extended to Keewatin.
