Video recordings of a three-day symposium held at the Ontario Science Centre in Toronto. The explorers and scientists who opened the Canadian north recount their discoveries and adventures there. More than 40 explorers and scientists met during the symposium. The featured speakers in order of appearance, include: Graham W. Rowley (paper: The Original Native Explorers of the Arctic); Richard S. Finnie (paper: Bernier and the Arctic); Evelyn Stefansson Nef (paper: Vilhjalmur Stefansson); Frank T. Davies (paper: The Second International Polar Year Expedition to Chesterfield Inlet, 1932-33); RCMP Superintendent William G. Fraser (paper: The Royal Canadian Mounted Police in the Arctic); an interview with Evelyn Stefansson Nef and Mrs. Jackie Manning; an interview with Lord Shackleton and Superintendent William Fraser; Thomas H. Manning (paper: The Last Explorations in North America for New Lands: Foxe Basin, 1933-47); Patrick D. Baird (paper: William Baffin's Beautiful Island); Paul Fenimore "Niki" Cooper, Jr. (paper: Herschel Island and the History of the Western Arctic); C.H. Douglas Clarke (paper: On Hornby's Trail: The Thelon Game Sanctuary, 1934-42); Col. Walter A. Wood (paper not published: Ice Field Ranges Research Project); and an interview of Kenneth C. Maclure and Clennell Haggerston "Punch" Dickins. The remainder of the speakers were not videotaped: Keith R. Greenaway; Murray Watts (paper: Prospecting in the Arctic); Ray Thorsteinsson; E. 1. Co-sponsored by the Royal Canadian Geographical Society and the Ontario Science Centre, with financial support from Imperial Oil Limited and Wintario.~2. The proceedings were subsequently published in the book: Living Explorers of the Canadian Arctic: The Historic Symposium of Arctic Scientists, Explorers, and Adventurers: Toronto, 1978. (Outcrop Ltd., 1986).~3. The proceedings were recorded under very poor lighting conditions.~4. Thomas H. Manning's talk was only recorded in part. See his paper published as chapter fourteen in Living Explorers of the Canadian Arctic. ~5. Imperial Oil assisted in sponsoring the symposium and commissioned fifteen paintings by artist, Lisa Calvert, who captured Arctic wildlife on canvass. It was the first time that the collection was displayed at the Ontario Science Centre, and a cross-Canada tour of the collection followed.
