One of a series of oral history interviews about the history of art education in Montreal. The period between 1920 and 1960 was a key one in the history of art education in Montreal. During that time two pioneer artist teachers, Anne Savage and Arthur Lismer, worked in the city setting up model programs and influencing many people. Contemporary art education in Canada has its roots in their philosophies and practice. Anne Savage worked in the school system and Arthur Lismer worked at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. Anne Savage established a vital art program and practiced an avant-garde teaching method at Baron Byng High School, nurturing a group of students who became important in the cultural life of Montreal. Lismer established a Children's Art Centre at the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts. This series of oral history interviews are of people who were associated with Lismer and Savage and records their recollections of the artists as teachers, their philosophies and their teaching practice, and the role of their teaching as it related to other art teaching going on at the time.
