Three members of the British-Canadian Arctic Expedition discuss with Trevor Lloyd, Chairman of the Department of Geography at McGill University. Colonel Patrick D Baird, geologist and geographer, Thomas Manning surveyor and field naturalist, and Graham Rowley, archaeologist and session advisor on Northern Affairs in the Canadian Government. Opening sequence of a map of Foxe Basin showing Rowley Island, Bray Island, Baird Peninsula, Parry Point, and Taverner Bay. They discuss the expedition activities including: building a shelter as mosquitoes were unpleasant; making a camp at Eskimo (Inuit) ruins; digging at a site at Southampton Islands; astronomical fix with no maps, therefore need exact time, a radio chronometer and take position of the stars and altitude; challenges with not being able to see stars in the summer and radio freezing up in the winter; Walrus Island and walrus herd of 2,000; challenges with boat taking on water and supplies becoming low; falling asleep and waking up to find one tonne walrus sleeping beside Rowley; two members travelling to Duke of York Bay and two others joined later from Coral Harbour, then up to Repulse Bay, Igloolik, Piling, Pond Inlet, Ross Bay and Wager Inlet; springtime is continuous daylight but travelling at night is better as temperature cools down and makes for faster travel; carrying surveying equipment slowing them down; in spring and summer of 1937, surveys completed on Repulse Bay, Wager Bay and Committee Bay; in spring of 1938, Manning sailed over to Cape Dorset to meet the steamer Nascopie; Manning was married on board the Nascopie by Bishop Fleming of the Arctic; Rowley found two areas that may have had evidence of Cape Dorset people and wanted to excavate site at Avvajja, near Igloolik; Bray and Baird began to sail towards Igloolik and a tragic accident happened as Bray tried to manoeuver and sailed out to sea never to be found again; Baird's military service and Manning's service in the navy. <28mn>Language:EnglishOriginal number:106B 0164 209Notes:1.
