Collection consists of microfilm copies of records held by the American Federation of Labor - Congress of Industrial Organizations, 1881-1948, 57 reels; and records held by the State Historical Society of Wisconsin, n.d., 1878-1937, 87 reels. The records include early federation records, administrative papers including files of the Office of the President, convention materials, national and international union correspondence and other papers, as well as Mining Department records. This material is located on microfilm reels M-7096 to M-7239.

American Federation of Labor : The American Federation of Labor (AFL) originated in the Federation of Organized Trades and Labor Unions of the United States and Canada (FOTLU) which was established in 1881. In 1886 FOTLU was dissolved and the AFL was established, with the object of organizing skilled workers of the same craft into national unions. Samuel Gompers was elected president, a position he held, except for 1894-95, until his death in 1924. In 1935 the American labour movement was split with the establishment of the Congress of Industrial Organizations (CIO), formed to organize the unskilled and semiskilled in mass production industries; the division continued until 1955, when the two groups were united as the AFL-CIO.

Unions affiliated with the AFL were active in organizing in Canada from the early period of the federation's history. In 1902 the Trades and Labor Congress (TLC), which had been organized in Canada in 1886, committed itself to work through AFL unions as well as purely Canadian organizations, and through its subsequent history the greater part of the TLC's membership was in international unions. Accordingly much of the AFL collection is of relevance to Canadian labour history; the presidential correspondence with unions with branches in Canada is of particular significance.
