The Birks family has a long tradition as jewellers. In 1562 Richard Birks was officially registered in the Court Rolls of the Sheffield Cutler's Company. Since that time forty-seven of the Birks family have been on the Sheffield records. In 1766 William Birks, a silversmith, became the master of the Cutler's Company of Sheffield. The Birks family continued this tradition in Canada where John Birks settled in 1832. His son Henry Birks, born in 1840, set up the firm Henry Birks and Sons in 1879 in Montreal. From that time the Company has always remained in family hands. Henry Birks died in 1928 leaving the business to William Massey Birks, one of three sons. W.M. Birks' son, Henry G. Birks, became President in 1950. The present President is George Drummond Birks, son of Henry G. Birks.Additional information:General note:Received in 1976 and 1978 from Henry Birks and Sons Limited.
