Macdonell, Archibald Cameron, Sir, 1864-1941 : Major-General Sir Archibald Cameron MacDonell, born in 1864 at Windsor, Ont., received his education from Trinity College School, Port Hope, Ont., and the Royal Military College, Kingston, Ont. He was gazetted a lieutenant in the Canadian Mounted Infantry Permanent Corps and appointed an adjutant and quartermaster in 1888.

Major-General MacDonell served in the North West Mounted Police from 1899 to 1907, and saw action in the South African War with the Canadian Mounted Rifles. Prior to World War I, he acted as a military instructor and as commanding officer of Lord Stratchcona's Horse, with which he served in France. By the end of the war, he had risen to the rank of major-general, in command of the 1st Canadian Division overseas. From 1919 to 1925, General Macdonell was Commandant of the Royal Military College.
