Positive - paper - silverLanguage of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of lumber stock and order books which contain a record of lumber purchased, wintered, and sold by R.R. Dobell and Co. They contain a great deal of information regarding the operation of the lumber industry, prices, methods of purchase and sale, types of lumber, composition of shiploads, and other details not readily available elsewhere. Correspondence between Elizabeth Jenkins Dobell and her son Alfred Curzon Dobell in 1904; correspondence of Richard Reid Dobell and his son Alfred between 1893 and 1902; correspondence between Mrs. Alfred Dobell (Helen Maffett Dobell) and her mother Kathleen M. Horsfall living in England between 1933 - 1959; correspondence between Alfred Dobell and his wife Helen Maffett between 1916-1935. The fonds also contains Estate documents of Alfred Curzon Dobell (1951), Mrs. Helen Maffett Dobell (1968); financial documents; an album of photographs depicting Hon. and Ms. Richard Reid Dobell; their residence "Beauvoir Manor", Sillery, Quebec towards 1870-1890; group portraits of the Dobell family members; document on Indian Land sale to Louis Larouche, Township of Ouiatchouan, County of Lake St.John, 18 August, 1898; letter from Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier to Mrs. Richard Reid Dobell when her husband died in 1902; the old Jesuit Mission House, Sillery, Quebec; and timber coves of Sillery, Quebec.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Dobell, R. R. (Richard Reid), 1837-1902 : Richard Reid Dobell, born in Liverpool, England, received his education from Liverpool College. He came to Canada in 1857 and founded a lumber and mercantile firm at Quebec City. He was president of a cold storage company and director of Quebec Railway Bridge Co. In 1896, he helped to found the British Empire League. He was a Liberal Member of Parliament and served as Minister without portfolio from 1896 until his death. He was appointed a Member of the Privy Council in 1896.
