Fonds consists of a letter from J. Beaufort Hurlbert to Carling about the Canadian wood display at the 1862 World's Exhibition, original, dated 13 November 1885, 4 pages; reminiscences of the period 1862-1896 by Louisa M. Carling, daughter of Sir John, a life history of Sir John, and genealogical tables of the Carling family, photocopy, n.d., 2.5 cm. The fonds also contains copies of photographs depicting Sir John A. Macdonald with members of the Carling family, Dalhousie, N.B., 1887; and the unveiling of a plaque commemorating Sir John Carling, London, Ontario.

Carling, John, Sir, 1828-1911 : Sir John Carling, born in 1828 at London, Upper Canada, became a brewer at London, Ont. He was president of Carling Brewing and Malting Co. and director of the Great Western Railway, the London-Huron-Bruce Railway and the London-Port Stanley Railway. He served as an alderman of London from 1854-1858.

Sir John Carling was elected to the old parliament of Canada in 1857 and in 1862 was appointed Receiver General in the Cartier-Macdonald government. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario, 1867-1872 and served as Minister of Agriculture and Public Works, 1867-1871. He was a Member of the Privy Council, 1882 and served as Postmaster-General 1882-1885, Minister of Agriculture 1885-1892, and Minister Without Portfolio, 1892-1894. He was noted for the establishment of agricultural schools and experimental farms.

He was called to the Senate, 1891 resigned 1892 and was recalled in 1896. In 1893, he was made a K.C.M.G.
