Fonds consists of correspondence of a general, family and business nature, 1880-1930 and printed material, 1879-1822, 1903. None of the general correspondence (1 cm., vol. 1) refers to the term of Mackintosh as Lieutenant-Governor and there is a descriptive list of it. Included are two letters from the first husband of Mackintosh's daughter, Marion, and four letters from her second husband, the Hon. (late Sir) Frederick W. G. Haultain referring only to family affairs (1.3 cm, vol.1). A letterbook, 1892, contains copies of letters written by Mackintosh, chiefly concerning the Lake Manitoba Railway and Canal Company and British Columbia mining investments (1.3 cm, or 57 pages, vol. 2). Printed material consists of minutes of the Ottawa City Council, 1879-1882 (10 cm, vols. 3 to 5), and a copy of an act to incorporate the Canadian Industrial Corporation Ltd., 1903, (1 page, vol. 1).

Mackintosh, Charles Herbert, 1843-1931 : The Hon. Charles H. Mackintosh, born in London, Canada West, edited several newpapers before he became the editor of the Daily Citizen, Ottawa, 1874-1892. He served as mayor of Ottawa, 1879-1881, Conservative member of Parliament, 1882-1887, 1890-1893, and lieutenant-governor of the North-West Territories, 1 November 1893 to 3 January 1898.

He was president of the Ottawa Colonization Railway and Gatineau Railway and a promoter of mining projects, chiefly in British Columbia. He was the author of several publications.

Most of the Hon. Charles H. Mackinotosh's papers were destroyed by fire. The surviving papers received in 1956 from Mrs. John Boone, his granddaughter.
