Thomas White was born and educated in Montreal, Lower Canada. He became a merchant and journalist, first as founder and editor of the Peterborough Review, 1853-1860; then as founder and editor of the Hamilton Spectator, 1864-1868; and finally assumed control of the Montreal Gazette in 1870 following an appointment as emigration agent for Canada in England, 1869-1870. First elected to the House of Commons for Cardwell, Ont. in 1878, he served as a Conservative member until 1888, during which time he was appointed Member of the Privy Council, 1885, Minister of the Interior, 1885-1888, and Superintendant General of Indian Affairs, 1887-1888.Additional information:General note:Received in 1984 from H.
