1 badge enamel and brass with cloth.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of files relating to MacNicol's work with the Conservative Party, 1920-1949; material accumulated during his career as member of Parliament, 1930-1949, including subject files on electoral reform, coal, iron and steel, petroleum, the Great Lakes waterway, water resources and flood control, post-war reconstruction, Indian affairs, and other topics; papers of MacKenzie Bowell, 1893-1896.
The fonds also consists of numerous photographic materials. Photographs pertain to various aspects of the career of John Ritchie MacNicol (1878-1949); glass slides used by MacNicol for his lectures.
The fonds includes National Conservative Convention, 1927, lapel buttons with ribbons featuring image of Sir John A. Macdonald.
Also included in the fonds is a cartoon drawing showing J.R. MacNicol as a Tory in Mount Forest, Ontario in 1900, on his way to buy a Tory newspaper, while the Grit newspaper editor, James Fisher, looks on.
The fonds consists of print of Thomas Vien, House of Commons Speaker, 1943, from original oil painting hanging in the House of Commons.
The fonds contains flag pennants, one decorated with maple leaves, the other seven spelling out "welcome".
In addition, the fonds contains one badge with fringed red and black ribbons of the British Imperial Association, worn on the occasion of the 1911 meeting at Earls Court, London, England.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:MacNicol, John Ritchie, 1878-1950 : John Ritchie MacNicol was born at Beaverton, Onatrio, Auguust 31, 1878. He attended public school and collegiates, and Bryant and Stratton College, Buffalo, New York. MacNicol taught school in Algoma and Grey Counties, Ontario.
He was president of the South York Liberal-Conservative Association 1917-1920, and president of the Ward 6 Toronto Association, 1921-1922. He was secretary of the Liberal-Conservative Association of Ontairo, 1921-1923, and president, 1923-1930. He served as president of the federal Conservative Party, 1925-1943, in which capacity he was jointly responsible for the organization of the Conservative leadership conventions of 1927 and 1938.
MacNicol became Member of Parliament for Toronto-Davenport in 1930, a seat he retained until 1949, when he was defeated by Paul Hellyer. As an M.P., he pursued a wide variety of interests, including Great Lakes shipping, the Athabaska tar sands, irrigation and water conservation, flood control, electoral reform (which he opposed) and Native Indian questions.Additional information:General note:Volumes 1-12 and 15-18 were received from Mattie M.I.
