Series include: personal papers; broadcasts; articles, projects and pamphlets; speeches; awards and honorary degrees; Royal Commission on the Status of Women; autobiography; manuscripts; subject files; Senate.
Fonds also consists of photographic material depicting the activities and career of Florence Bird from 1948 to 1975 as a radio chairman of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women in Canada; Florence and John Bird with friends; activities and career of Florence Bird (pen name Anne Francis) from 1959 to 1989 as a journalist, senator, broadcaster, and author; snapshots of family and relatives.
Fonds also includes of philatelic material consisting of Canadian first day covers issued by Canada Post Corporation. Art material consists of posters reflecting Florence Bird's career in the CBC, her work in the landmark Royal Commission on the Status of Women, and lectures spawned by her initiatives and exploration of feminist labour activism in the 1980's and 1990's; drawings are two cartoon depictions of Hitler and Mussoloni by Mozel; oil portrait painting of Florence Bird by C. Nye; watercolour is a pastoral scene reputedly by English painter William Hull entitled "Stone Bridge in English Countryside".
Fonds also contains sound recordings consisting of an interview with Baroness Karen Blixen, by Bird in Denmark, about her life, her book and feminism. 1960; and a 1975 CBC radio program entitled Between ourselves about Nellie McClung and women's suffrage with comments and extracts of interviews with Bird.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Bird, Florence, 1908-1998 : Florence Bayard Rhein (1908-1998), journalist and senator, was born in Philadelphia and studied at Bryn Mawr University. She married journalist John Bird in 1928 and they emigrated to Canada in 1930, settling in Montreal where she began to write novels and short stories. In 1937 the Birds moved to Winnipeg where Florence Bird became involved in writing and broadcasting using the professional name Anne Francis. She continued her broadcasting career after their move to Ottawa in 1946, becoming known as a spokesperson for the rights of working women. During the fifties and sixties she undertook a number of broadcasting assignments which meant extensive travel to Europe and India.
In 1967 she was appointed Chairman of the Royal Commission on the Status of Women which brought down its report in 1970. She was appointed Senator in 1977, retiring at the age of 75 in January 1983. Her book Anne, Francis: An Autobiography, was published in 1974.
