The fonds also contains photographs, [ca. 1910]-1947, depicting the career and activities of J.W. Noseworthy as MPP, Ontario; MP and educator; Frontier College; Fort Nelson, Man.; Victoria College, Toronto; Grenfell's expedition to Baffin Strait, 1913-1914; and portraits of Noseworthy, [1944-1947].Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Noseworthy, Joseph William, 1888-1956 : Joseph William Noseworthy, was born in 1888 at Lewisporte, Nfld. Prior to immigrating to Canada in 1910, Noseworthy worked as a missionary along the Labrador coast for the Grenfell Mission of the Methodist Church. In Canada Noseworthy worked his way through Albert College in Belleville, the University of Toronto and the Ontario College of Education by working summers or evenings as a miner for the McIntyre Mine in Timmins and as a teacher for Frontier College. Later he taught high school in Toronto. He became president of the Ontario Secondary School Teachers' Federation.
After an unsuccessful attempt in 1940, Noseworthy was elected to the House of Commons in 1942, defeating Arthur Meighen in a by-election in York South. He served as CCF Member of Parliament for York South from 1942 to 1945 and 1949 until his death in 1956.
