The fonds includes correspondence; manuscripts and audio recordings of his poetry, plays, fiction, and non-fiction writings; records relating to the movement for the Canadianization of universities in Canada; records of his involvement with the Great Canadian Theatre Company; the Association of Canadian and Quebec Literatures; the Waffle; the National Party of Canada; and various legal cases while he was at the University of Alberta. The Canadianization material includes a video recording of a panel discussion in which Mathews participated on the Americanization of the Canadian educational system.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Mathews, Robin, 1931-2023 : Robin Daniel M. Mathews, university professor and political activist, was born in 1931 at Smithers, B.C., and received his education from the University of British Columbia, B.A. 1955, and Ohio State University, M.A. 1958. He first taught at Ohio State, as a teaching assistant and lecturer, then at U.B.C. and the University of Toronto, 1958-1961. He joined the University of Alberta's English department, 1961, where he was made an assistant professor before resigning in 1966. He was hired by Carleton University as an assistant professor of English literature, 1968, and taught there for the next eighteen years, becoming a full professor in 1976. In 1986, he took a leave of absence from Carleton to teach at Simon Fraser University.
Mathews began his career as an activist while at the University of Alberta. During Mathews' first year at Carleton he co-authored, with James Steele, the Carleton University Memorandum, which recommended quotas for Canadian professors at Canadian universities and which was followed in 1969 by their book, The struggle for Canadian universities. From then on Mathews was closely identified with the Canadianization movement, advocating the promotion of Canadians in prominent roles in Canadian universities and other institutions and the adoption of Canadian literature courses in Canadian universities and schools.
Mathews was involved in the founding of the Association for Canadian and Quebec Literatures, co-founded the Great Canadian Theatre Company, 1975, and was a co-founder of Steel Rail Publishing, 1976. He was a member of the Ontario Waffle, and its Ottawa branch, 1969-1973, and co-founded in 1978 the Canadian Voice for Independence, the National Party of Canada. He has written extensively on the subject of Canadian literature, is the author of the book of essays, Canadian literature: surrender or revolution, 1978, as well, he has written several collections of poetry, short stories and plays.
