He held numerous corporate directorships. Ballantyne was defeated as a Liberal candidate in 1911. Representing St-Laurent-St-Georges, Montréal, he became a Unionist Member of the House of Commons, 1917-1921, holding the office of Minister of Public Works, October 1917, and of Marine and Fisheries and of Naval Service, 1917-1921). He sat as a Senator from 1932 until his death.
