T. (Alexander Tilloch), Sir, 1817-1893 : Born in London, England, Alexander Tilloch Galt came to Canada in 1830 and in 1835 entered the service of the British American Land Company. He became Commissioner of the company and a promoter and important stockholder in the St. Lawrence and Atlantic Railroad and the Grand Trunk Railway.
Galt represented Sherbrooke County, 1849-1850, 1853-1872, first in the Legislative Assembly of Canada, then in the House of Commons. He was Inspector General, 1858-1862, Minister of Finance, 1864-1865, 1867, and Minister of Agriculture, 1865-1866. He attended the Quebec conference and was a Canadian delegate to England 1865 and 1866. He was a member of the Halifax Fishery Commission, 1877, and was the first Canadian High Commissioner to the United Kingdom, 1880-1883. He incorporated Northwestern Coal and Navigation Co., Lethbridge, a successful company which was sold to the CPR in 1910. Timothy; the items in Vol. 9 were received in 1960 from Mrs. T.B. Heney, in 1964 from Mrs. J.B.
