She worked for many years as a librarian, at Mount Allison University, Carleton University in Ottawa (where she first met the Canadian poet George Johnston), the New Brunswick Legislative Library and the University of Alberta Library. In 1970 Brewster began teaching English at the University of Alberta (where the poets Dorothy Livesay and Margaret Atwood were among her colleagues). From 1972 until 1990 she taught English at the University of Saskatchewan.
Brewster began writing poetry as a student and received early encouragement from the slightly older poet P.K. Page, who was then living in New Brunswick. Brewster's work first appeared in the little magazine The Fiddlehead, whose founding editor, A.G. Bailey, and his successor, Fred Cogswell, she had met while a student at UNB. Ryerson Press published her first book of poetry, the chapbook East Coast, in 1951 and followed it with three other titles, including Lillooet in 1954 and the important collection of selected poems Passage of Summer which established her reputation in 1969.
Brewster is the author of novels, including The Sisters (1974) and Junction (1983), and collections of short stories, including It's Easy to Fall on the Ice (1977) and Visitations (1987), as well as being a prolific poet, whose many collections include Entertaining Angels (1988), Spring Again (1990), Footnotes to the Book of Job (1995) and Garden of Sculpture (1998), Burning Bush (2000), Jacob's Dream (2002), and Bright Centre (2005). The Collected Poems of Elizabeth Brewster (2003) was published by Oberon Press.
Elizabeth Brewster received an honorary degree from the University of New Brunswick in 1982 and a Lifetime Award for Excellence in the Arts from the Saskatchewan Board of Arts in 1995. Her collection of poems, Footnotes to the Book of Job, was nominated for a Governor-General's Award in 1998. She was named to the Order of Canada in 2001 and to the Saskatchewan Order of Merit in 2008. Elizabeth Brewster died in 2012.Additional information:Accruals:Received in several accruals between 1989 to 2009 from Elizabeth Brewster of Saskatoon, Saskatchewan.Subject heading:- Elizabeth Brewster - Manuscripts, n.d., [ca.1943]-1989 Lillooet, n.d., [1945]-1989
