Charles Grey and Caroline Eliza Farquhar, was born Nov. 28, 1851 in St. James's Palace, London, and died at Howick, Northumberland, Aug. 29, 1917. Brought up in Windsor Castle and educated at Harrow and Cambridge. Married Alice Holford in 1877. Succeeded to the earldom on the death of his uncle in 1894. Became Governor General of Canada Dec. 10, 1904 a post which he held until Oct. 12, 1911.
Lord Grey was a keen imperialist, and an advocate of Newfoundland's entry into Confederation. He inaugurated music and drama festivals, and donated the Grey Cup.
See: Canadian Encyclopedia, p. 774.Additional information:General note:The Grey of Howick Papers relating to Canada were selected by the Dominion Archivist in 1955 from the Grey Papers in the custody of the University of Durham. When all or the greater part of a file concerned Canada, the original file was obtained and a photostat copy left at Durham, but when the greater part of a file did not concern Canada, the original was left at Durham and photostats of the relevant papers obtained by the Public Archives.
Thus the Grey of Howick Papers consist of two distinct series, one original correspondence, the other photostats of correspondence.Custodial history:The two letters written by Rev. H.A.
