1 map.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of five series, as established by Mr. Nickerson's House of Commons staff. These series are as follows: Constituent correspondence; Territorial government correspondence; Subject series; Federal government; Outgoing correspondence, 1971-1989.
The fonds contains photographs of Nickerson in his role as Member of the House; photos of various N.W.T. power plants; and a ceremony declaring the Notre-Dame-De-Bonne-Esperance Church, N.W.T. as a Canadian historical site, 1977-1988.
The fonds also contains a map depicting proposals for the division of the N.W.T. by the Federal Government, Dene Nation, and the Inuit Tapirisat of Canada, 1976-1988.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Nickerson, Dave, 1944- : Dave Nickerson first arrived in the N.W.T. in 1965 and worked at the Discovery and Giant Mines. He was active with mine rescue work and served on the union safety committee. He left this to establish his own minerals exploration business which he operated out of Yellowknife for ten years.
His political career started in 1975 with his election to the Territorial Legislature as the member for Yellowknife-North. There, he served as Chairman of the Standing Committee on Legislation before his appointment to Minister of Health and Social Development. He resigned this position in 1977.
Mr. Nickerson was subsequently elected to the House of Commons (Western Arctic) in the 1979 general election. He was re-elected in 1980 and 1984. He was defeated in the 1988 general election.
While in the House of Commons, he served as a member on the Sub-committee on the Northern Canada Power Commission (N.C.P.C.) of the Standing Committee on Indian Affairs and Northern Development. It should be noted that the N.C.P.C. (a Crown Corporation) is responsible for the delivery of utility services (mostly electrical) to the Yukon and N.W.T.
