Photographic material depicts portraits and activities in the political career of R.H. Winters, ca. 1945-1968; royal visit of 1951 to Halifax and to Montreal in 1967. Photographs by the National Film Board, Capital Press Service, Frank Royal, Gaby, Nova Scotia Bureau of Information, the Halifax Herald Limited. Also included are sound recordings of Robert Winters at a TV press conference and addressing the Canadian Club, 1950-1966.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Winters, Robert Henry, 1910-1969 : Robert Henry Winters, cabinet minister and politician, graduated from Mount Allison University in 1931 and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in 1934 as an electrical engineer. During World War II, he served as a Lieutenant-Colonel with the Royal Canadian Ordnance Corps and the Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers. In the general election of 1945, Robert Winters was elected as a Liberal to the House of Commons for Queens-Lunenberg. He was re-elected in the general elections of 1949 and 1953 but was defeated in 1957. Robert Winters was appointed Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Transport in 1948. He was appointed Minister of Reconstruction and Supply 15 November 1948; Minister of Resources and Development 18 January 1950; and Minister of Public Works 18 September 1953 to 1957.
Winters was re-elected in the general election of 1965 for York West and was appointed Minister of Trade and Commerce 4 January 1966 and the Minister responsible for Expo 67. He was not a candidate in the general election of 1968. In 1957, Robert Winters joined the Rio Tinto Mining Company of Canada as President. In 1960, he was named President of Rio Algom Mines Limited. During the period 1957 to 1965, Robert Winters became director of 15 major Canadian corporations and of the Rio Tinto Zinc Corporation, London, England. He was a member of the International Advisory Committee of the Chase Manhattan Bank.
