He was at various times Keeper of State Records, Chief Clerk of the Department of State, and Acting Under-Secretary of State. Intensely concerned with Canadian development and achievement, Morgan was one of the founders of the Canada First movement. See: 'Encyclopedia Canadiana', Vol. 7, p. 160.Additional information:General note:The National Archives received most of the collection in 1949 from the family of Henry James Morgan in Brockville, Ontario. Subsequent items were acquired from Marion G. Rogers, Brock University, Prof. F.H. Armstrong, the Bibliothèque Nationale, Bernard Amtmann, and the National Postal Museum, between 1963 and 1978.
Most of the Additional Papers - Second Series were purchased by the National Archives as individual items at auction in 1996 from Hoss' Auctioneering Service, Nepean, Ontario; the documents were formerly in the possession of descendants of Henry James Morgan living in Ottawa. Two John Abbott letters in the Additional Papers - Second Series were received in 1996 from Kevin L. Phillips, a descendant of John Abbott, who had purchased them at the same auction. A letter from James Pech was donated by Suanne Rogers in 2001.
The postcard (acc. no. 1997-383) was purchased at the 1996 Hoss auction by James Brennan who then donated it to the National Archives. The print (acc. no. 1996-264) was also bought at that auction.Subject heading:- Rideau Canal (Ont.)
