Also includes illustrations, press clippings, newspapers, bulletins, circulars and other periodicals. Additional unprocessed material can be found in volumes 25-34, 40-41, 43-82, 85, 87-90.
Fonds also consists of photographs of the events and activities, groups and individuals associated with the life and work of Avramenko as choreographer, popularizer of Ukrainian folk dance, actor and organizer of dance schools. Includes production stills from the films "Marusia" and "Natalka Poltavaka".
Fonds also consists of motion picture posters for the films "The Girl From Poltava", "Cossacks in Exile" and "Marusia" (3 copies of each).
Fonds also consists of moving images shot by Mr. Avramenko, primarily dealing with the history of Ukrainian Canadians.
Included in horizontal storage: primarily posters regarding various ballets, chorus and dances, and films, containers 91 to 133. Containers 134 to 147 have unidentified contents.Provenance :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Avramenko, Vasyl' : Vasile Avramenko was born on March 22 in Stebliv, Kiev Oblast, Ukraine. He attended a teachers college in Vladivostok, Russia in 1913-14. He served in the Russian Army in 1915-17 and in the Ukrainian Army in 1918-1920. While serving in the Ukrainian Army, he attended the School of Dramatic Art and participated in the Sadovsky Theatre in Kiev, Ukraine in 1917-18.
He founded the first school of Ukrainian dance in 1921 while interned in a Polish internment camp in Kalisz. During the years 1921-24, he organized performances and dance schools in western Ukraine, Czechoslovakia and Germany.
He immigrated to Canada in 1926 and continued to organize performances and dance schools in various Ukrainian communities in Canada and the United States. He directed numerous performances in Canada during the years 1926-28 including a spectacle at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto in 1926. He toured in over 30 performances with the Olexander Koshets Choir in the United States during the years 1928-1935. He also performed at the White House in Washington DC in 1935.
He embarked into motion picture production organizing his own film production company in 1936-37. He was involved in the production of Zaporozhets za Dunaiem, Natalka Poltavka, Marusia and other films and documentaries. During most of the war years he lived and worked in Hollywood, California. In 1946, he published Ukrainski Natsionalni Tanky, Muzyka i Strii/Ukrainian national dances, music and costumes/(Winnipeg). He organized his own dance studio in New York from 1952. He also toured Brazil and Argentina in 1951-52, Australia in 1961-62 and Israel in 1971-72.
Avramenko introduced Ukrainian communities in Canada and the United States the concept and practice of Ukrainian folk dance which became a uniquely North American phenomenon. He always attempted to present Ukrainian culture in a positive manner as part of the larger goal to remind the Ukrainian communities and the larger audience of the political situation in Ukraine. His style of dance and performance became identified as a major component of Ukrainian culture in Canada.
