Fonds consists of original drafts of each issue of HMCS Uganda's internal newspaper, the Uganda Tar Paper, covering the period from 14 February 1945 to 9 August 1945, with many of the signals exchanged by the ship during fleet operations, 10 April to 25 July 1945.

Uganda (Ship) : HMCS Uganda was one of two cruisers transferred from the Royal Navy to the Royal Canadian Navy in the Second World War. Completed in 1942 as HMS Uganda, she had been badly damaged while supporting the Allied landings at Salerno, Italy, in September 1943. After repairs, she was commissioned as a Canadian ship in October 1944. In January 1945, HMCS Uganda sailed via the Mediterranean Sea and Suez Canal to join the British Pacific Fleet. In April 1945, HMCS Uganda joined Task Force 57 in the Okinawa area, and was thereafter principally employed in screening the fleet's aircraft carriers as they carried out strikes against the Japanese home islands. HMCS Uganda left the fleet in July 1945, arriving at Esquimalt on 10 August 1945, five days before the end of the Pacific war. HMCS Uganda was the only RCN ship to see active service against the Japanese.

HMCS Uganda spent the remainder of her career as a training ship for the Royal Canadian Navy. Renamed HMCS Quebec in 1952, she was paid off in 1956, and was broken up at Osaka, Japan, in 1961.

Collected by CPO Telegraphist Don McGee, a wartime member of the ship's crew of HMCS Uganda. Acquired in 1993 from Doris J. Belanger of Richmond, British Columbia, former wife of the late Don McGee, via Darrell Bedford, a wartime telegraphist aboard HMCS Uganda and current member of the HMCS Uganda Veterans Association.
