Also included is information on gold mining in Sierra Leone and the nature preserve of the Gault Estate on Mont St Hilaire, Québec.

Fonds consists of seven architectural drawings for a summer house for Mrs. Henry A.C. Jackson at St. Aubert, Quebec and twenty maps relating to various expeditions to Baffin Island undertaken by Patrick Baird from 1933 to 1973.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Baird, P. D. (Patrick Douglas), 1912-1984 : Pat Baird, geographer, was born in Newmarket, England, educated at the Edinburgh Academy and at Cambridge University where he received a B.A. and M.A. in Geography. He was engaged in many expeditions to the Canadian Arctic from the J.M. Wordie Expedition in 1934 for Cambridge University, the British Canadian Expedition 1936 to 1939, two expeditions for the Arctic Institute of North America in 1950 and 1953 and numerous other Expeditions to Baffin Island for scientific research and mountain climbing up to 1974. He was instrumental in promoting the establishment of Auyuittuq National Park in Baffin Island. From 1934 to 1936, he served as a geologist at a gold mine for the Sierra Leone Development Company in Africa. During World War Two, he served overseas from 1939 to 1943 rising from the rank of gunner.
In 1944, he returned to Canada and aboard the NASCOPIE made a survey of Inuit settlements in the Eastern Arctic which recommended that the Federal Government greatly increase its responsibilities for education and health. He then trained men in Arctic warfare and with the rank of Lt. Col. was field commander of Operation Muskox in 1946. In 1947, he was appointed Director of the Montreal Office of the Arctic Institute of North America serving until 1954. From 1954 to 1959, he returned to Scotland as a geography professor at the University of Aberdeen. He returned to Canada in 1959 to serve as warden of the Gault Estate at Mont St Hilaire which included responsibility for McGill's Arctic research as well as being a geography professor. In 1970, he was responsible for the Montreal Office of the Arctic Institute of North America until his retirement in 1976.
