5 pins.Language of material:EnglishScope and content:Fonds consists of records created or accumulated by Norman Atkins during his professional career, in his personal life, and a large amount of material relating to his involvement in politics. These three areas of Atkins' life tend to overlap and it is often hard to determine whether a record is of a personal, professional or political nature. The fonds contains: correspondence, memoranda, campaign strategy documents, notes, advertising copy, election posters and pamphlets, and polling information and analysis. During election campaigns, Atkins organized information immediately crucial to the campaign in series of binders, which he carried with him while out of the campaign office. These binders vary in content but the form remains consistent with established sections containing; background information, research updates, committee reports on strategy, campaign committee meeting minutes, finance and advertising, schedules, and names and numbers of key election workers. The fonds consists of the following series: Maritime Election Campaigns; Federal Politics; Ontario Politics; Camp Associates Advertising Limited, 1965-1979 Personal, Consultant Files, 1984 Election, 1988 Election, and 1980-1989 Personal.
The fonds contains photographs documenting Atkins' activities as campaign manager in provincial and federal election campaigns; and campaign ephemera such as pins, buttons, delegate tags, matchbook covers, and business cards, 1948-1988.
Included in the fonds are sound recordings of the proceedings of the National Conference on Canadian Goals / Conférence nationale sur les buts canadiens, held in Fredericton, New Brunswick from September 9-12, 1964.
The fonds also contains two floor plans from the 1971 Progressive Conservative Leadership Convention at Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto.Provenance:Biography/Administrative history:Atkins, Norman : Norman Atkins was born in Montclair, New Jersey on 27 June 1934 to Canadian parents. He was sent to Appleby College in Oakville, Ontario in 1946 and attended Acadia University between 1952 and 1957, graduating with a B.A. He was drafted into the United States army in September 1957 and served for two years in Germany.
Upon his return to Canada in 1959, Atkins joined Camp Associates Advertising Limited of Toronto which was owned by his brother-in-law, Dalton Camp (married to Atkins' sister, Linda). The firm specialized in promoting tourism, in particular for the provincial governments of Ontario and New Brunswick and the federal government. Atkins worked for Camp Associates for 27 years and was president for 1968 to 1986.
It was also through Dalton Camp, an influential member of the Progressive Conservative Party, that Atkins became involved in politics. Starting in 1952, Atkins assisted Camp in various provincial and federal elections on behalf of the Conservatives. In the 1965 federal election Dalton Camp ran and was defeated as the Progressive Conservative candidate for Eglinton riding. It was in this campaign that Norman Atkins first acted as a campaign organizer.
Atkins next major political involvement was in the Ontario provincial Conservative leadership race in 1970 when he supported Allan Lawrence. Despite Lawrence's defeat by Bill Davis, Atkins agreed to be Davis' campaign manager and organized a team of election workers that became known as the "Big Blue Machine". For the next ten years, Atkins remained involved almost exclusively in Ontario politics acting as campaign manager during elections and as an unofficial advisor to the Davis government. He was manager of the Ontario Provincial P.C. Campaign in the 1971 and 1975 elections, co-chairman for the 1977 provincial election and chairman for the 1981 provincial election.
After the 1983 Conservative leadership convention, Brian Mulroney requested Atkins' aid for the 1984 federal election. Atkins was campaign chairman and therefore a key player in the electoral success that gave the Conservatives a majority government. The 1988 federal election, with Atkins again acting as campaign chairman, resulted in a historic second majority government for the Conservatives. Atkins served as National Chairman, Organization for the P.C. Party from 1986-1989.
