The material is arranged in nine series: Postmaster General's Files (vols. 1-6), Post Office Departmental Files (vols. 6-45), Members of Parliament Correspondence (vols. 45-56), Consultants Correspondence (vols. 56-58), Political Correspondence (vols. 58-84), Speeches (vols. 84-85), Election Campaigns (vols. 85-86), World's Fair (vols. 86-87), and Caricatures and certificates (vol. 108). The fonds also includes a nominal card index (vols. 88-107) covering the Postmaster General's Files, Post Office Departmental Files, and the Political Correspondence series.Provenance :Nom(s) additionnel(s) :Biographie/Histoire administrative :Hamilton, William, 1919-1989 : William Hamilton, politician, was born in Montreal on 23 February 1919. Following his graduation from high school, Hamilton worked as a salesman in printing and advertising while pursuing night courses at Sir George Williams College, where he eventually obtained his B.Sc. (Comm.). After working for several years in the press-photography field, he was employed as an accountant and then as a hotel manager before joining the Wartime Prices and Trade Board.
Following the war, he became an executive in a wholesale paper and stationery business. From 1949 to 1957, he served as the General Manager of the Advertising and Sales Executive Club of Montreal and as Executive Director of the Federation of Canadian Advertising and Sales Clubs. During the 1950-1957 period, he also served as a City Councillor, representing first the Young Men's Section of the Montreal Board of Trade and then the Board itself.
Hamilton was first elected as the member of Parliament for Notre-Dame-de-Grâce, Montreal, in 1953 and was re-elected in 1957 and 1958. He served in the federal cabinet as Postmaster General from 1957 until his defeat in 1962. Following his departure from federal politics, he resumed his business career.
