Series consists of various notebooks relating to various subjects. There are lengthy engineering notes on the construction of the Parliament buildings in Ottawa, (Volumes 84-86), notebooks relating to various engineering projects between 1853-1887 (Vol. 86), sketches made on trips, diaries of trips, and several large account books (Vols. 88-92).

Also of interest is, in volume 87, a photocopy of a proof of the first Canadian postage stamp (1851) as well as a book entitled "Notes for Course Lecture on Geology in Kirkaldy, 1843" (includes Sandford Fleming's course notes and related sketches, as well as a letter from Martha Fleming to Sandford pasted into front of book.)

There is also notebook with an account of the accident, in 1879, of the steamship Martha.

General note:

According to notes in the file folder (in Vol. 87), the original copy of the postage stamp was first located in a safe in the Dominion Archivist's office. Later, the stamp went on loan to the Canadian Postal Museum in 1973. There is a copy negative created, C-1870. A digital copy, part of Mikan 2208145, has been attached to this record.
