Accession consists of technical material relating to electronic records of Canfarm currently stored at the National Archives of Canada. Canfarm was a joint federal-provincial-university program which offered a computerized farm record-keeping service, farm management and planning services, and databanks for use by farmers, policy-makers, and researchers. The project included specialized automated features, such as a computer program which drew up balanced diets for dairy cattle, and another program which advised feedlot owners when to purchase cattle, and what breeds to buy. Several affiliated agencies participated in the project, including banks, accounting firms, and bookkeeping companies. Canfarm was headquartered at Guelph and, at its peak, had some 15,000 subscribers. In 1969, in a cost-cutting measure, the federal government announced its intention to sell Canfarm, and later announced that it was transferring ownership of the program to the Canadian Federation of Agriculture. The transfer occurred in April, 1979.

Custodial history:

These records were transferred to GARDD from the OFRC in July 1999. The records were discovered by OFRC staff, and had not been registered. OFRC staff were uncertain as to when the material was transferred to that institution, but given the date of the material, it was after 1978. There was no documentation found in the boxes that indicated when these records were sent to the OFRC or under what circumstances, and the creator Department was of no assistance in this regard.
