Winnipeg Great Northern Railway Company : The Winnipeg and Hudson's Bay Railway and Steamship Company was incorporated in 1880 to construct a railway from Winnipeg to Port Nelson. Under Dominion Act, 50-51 Vic., Cap. 81 of 23 June 1887 the name was changed to Winnipeg and Hudson Bay Railway Company. The name was once again changed, under Dominion Act, 57-58 Vic., Cap. 94 of 23 July 1894 to the Winnipeg Great Northern Railway Company. Some 123 miles of line were opened between 1898 and 1905 as an extension of the Lake Manitoba Railway and Canal Company line. On 13 January 1899 these two companies amalgamated to form the Canadian Northern Railway Company. RG30 General Inventory
