Sub-series consists of the administrative records of the 1st Contingent at Valcartier, Bustard Camp and Tidworth General and Infantry Base Depots. Canada. Canadian Army. Canadian Expeditionary Force. Canadian Contingent, First : Shortly after the British declaration of war in August 1914, Canada offered an initial contingent of twenty-five thousand men for service overseas. Volunteers gathered at a hastily-erected camp at Valcartier, Québec, prior to being despatched overseas. The First Contingent arrived in England in October 1914 and spent the winter training on Salisbury Plain. The 1st Contingent formed the basis of the 1st Canadian Division which arrived in France early in February 1915.
