In 1947, the Pan-American Conference was established in New York City. This Conference regularly held meetings and the eighth and last session was held in November, 1967 on the eve of the World Congress of Free Ukrainians (WCFU). At the Sixth Congress of the Ukrainian Canadian Committee in 1959, a resolution was passed to establish a World Federation of Ukrainians. Planning sessions were held with the Pan-American Conference in 1960 and 1964. The planning resulted in the World Congress of Free Ukrainians which was founded on 16-19 November, 1967 in New York City. Its original purpose was to coordinate the activities of member organizations and to support the movement for an independent Ukraine. Ukrainian pro-communist organizations were excluded as members. The present membership includes national umbrella organizations such as the Ukrainian Canadian Congress, various other national Ukrainian associations and Ukrainian Catholic, Orthodox and Protestant Churches. The First World Congress of Free Ukrainians created a permanent Secretariat directed by the Executive Board. A statute was passed by the Congress with the provision that the World Congress meet every six years. The Presidium of the WCU has special committees to coordinate activities in certain fields such as social services, human rights, education, scholarship, cultural affairs, veterans affairs, credit unions and youth. The Information Service of the WCU publish a quarterly Visnyk SKU since 1974 and a bimonthly newsletter since 1980. After the independence of Ukraine in 1991, the name of the organization was changed to the World Congress of Ukrainians. Since 1991, one of the main goals of the WCU is to assist the development of demoratic institutions in Ukraine and to aid Ukrainian communities in the various countries once part of the former Soviet Union.
