Forest Industry Renewable Energy Program (Canada) : In July 1978 the Federal government made a major announcement that 80 million in federal funds were to be invested in a package of renewable energy programs during the 1979-1985 period. Funding for a variety of nation-wide programs was announced. Cabinet decided on June 1, 1978 to create a program to encourage the use of forest biomass as a substitute for oil and gas. A Treasury Board submission resulted in the Forest Industry Renewable Energy Program (FIRE) which used federal funds to encourage the use of forest industry waste products as an alternative to oil and gas. The FIRE program began in 1979 with a budget of 03 million for five years. In the NEP, the budget was increased to 88 million and the program extended to 1986. It applied to industrial, commercial or institutional energy users. The program provided a taxable grant of up to 20 percent of the capital costs of the new energy system. The NEP allowed for the expansion of the program in 1980 to apply to all industrial, commercial or institutional energy users who chose to install energy systems fuelled with forest, agricultural, industrial o municipal biomass. The program was expanded and funding increased in 1981 as the budget increased from 03 to 88 million and operated from 1978 to 1985. 179 projects were approved, displacing 1.4 million cubic metres of oil a year. With the NEP, it was expanded to help industrial, commercial and institutional establishments use municipal waste, agricultural waste and peat to replace oil.

The program drew criticism for lack of clear guidelines and poor implementation of granting decisions. Industry also voiced dissatisfaction with the results. It was closed 1988.
