World Council of Indigenous Peoples : The World Council of Indigenous Peoples (WCIP) came into being in 1975 as a result of the initiative of George Manuel, the President of the National Indian Brotherhood of Canada. He helped bring together representatives of indigenous peoples from different parts of the world, who, meeting in Port Alberni, British Columbia, in 1975 established the World Council of Indigenous Peoples. The purpose of the organization was to facilitate the exchange of information among indigenous peoples, strengthen their organizations, and work against those forces that contributed to the social, economic and cultural exploitation of indigenous peoples. To work toward these ends, representatives of organizations of indigenous peoples met on different occasions to work out a common strategy. At the same time, they sought to work together with the United Nations to help create conditions that would forward the well-being of indigenous peoples in different parts of the world. The organization continued with this work into the mid-1990s, when it declined.
