Series consists of unnumbered files containing reports, proposals, comments on arrangements, etc. dealing with assistance extended to all unemployed persons, regardless of age or reason for unemployment. There has been assistance for the unemployment since 22 September 1930 when the Unemployment Relief Act (21 Geo. V, chap. 1) was assented to. Since that time there have been numerous acts providing relief and assistance to the unemployed of Canada. The Unemployment Assistance Act (4-5 Eliz. II, Chap. 26) received Royal Assent on 11 July 1956. It provided for a federal contribution of 50% of the costs of unemployment assistance incurred by a province or municipality in that province. An agreement for the sharing of these costs was signed by all provinces except Quebec and the Northwest Territories.
