Often called Canada's national theatre, the Festival is the largest theatre in North America. The Festival's original plan called for a simple open-air presentation but, on the advice of Tyrone Guthrie, it was decided to construct a tent theatre. The tent was replaced in 1957 with the Festival Theatre. By 1971 the Avon Theatre and the Tom Patterson Theatre had also been added. As of 2002 the Festival employed more than 840 people, featured more than 650 performances, and recorded more than 600,000 yearly admissions.
