The records deal with protocol aspects of the office of the Speaker. He received delegates and representatives from both national parliamentary institutions and from international parliamentary agencies and bodies. The speaker's interests in these areas were the promotion of parliamentary democracy, as well as the role of speakers in parliamentary institutions.
The Speaker, as the key officer of the Canadian Parliament, was often visited by national representatives of various countries immediately upon their posting to Canada.
This fonds captures and reflects the Speaker's activity in these areas over the period 1994-2000. Madame Mariette Grant, as the executive official responsible for the Speaker's contacts with representatives of foreign governments, both at home and abroad, was the key individual in preparing briefings for the Speaker, as well as recording the proceedings and results of such meetings.
The fonds consists of the following series: Correspondence, 1994-1995; Speaker's Visits to Countries, 1995-1999; Co-operation and Liaison Activities, 1994-1999; Speaker's Calls, Visits and Correspondence, 1994-2000; Speaker's Meetings with Foreign Government Representatives, 1994-1997; and Courtesy Calls on Speaker, 1997-1999.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Parent, Gilbert, 1935- : Hon. Gilbert Parent was born in Mattawa, Ontario, in 1935. He was educated at St. Joseph's College (Indiana, USA), Niagara University and University of New York., after which First elected to the House of Commons in 1974, he sat until 1984, when he was defeated. He returned in the general election of 1988 and then sat without interruption until his resignation from the House in the year 2000. He served as Parliamentary Secretary to the ministers of Veterans' Affairs (1977-1979), Labour (1979-1981), Minister of Fitness and Amateur Sport (1981-1983). He was critic for Youth and Associate Critic for Canadian International Developmental Agency (from 1989) and then Critic for Labour and Associate crtitic for Industry (for 1992). In 1988-1990, he served as Vice-Chairman, Canadian_US Parliamentary Association. On 17 January 1994 he was elected Speaker of the House, and served as Speaker until 2000.
