The community is represented by photographs of Italian Canadians at work, enjoying leisure activities (i.e. the CHIN International Picnic), and lastly observing the annual Good Friday Procession. The 8 colour photographs are solely of the annual procession.
Pietropaolo's documentary project on migrant farm workers in Ontario's fruit
and vegetable and tobacco farms focus on their work in Canada. At the time (1984-1994) there were approximately 12,000 workers across 5 provinces. There are also a handful of photographs of the migrant workers' family and homes whom they left each year in countries such as Mexico and Jamaica.
Lastly, commissioned by the CAW (Canadian Auto Workers union) to celebrate its fiftieth anniversary, Pietropaolo took various photographs of Canadian workers in a wide range of working environments from a Gold mine to a brewery, to various service industries. These images are captured in 40 black and white photographs, and span 5 provinces and 2 territories.Provenance:Additional name(s):Biography/Administrative history:Pietropaolo, Vincenzo : Born on November 14th, 1951, in the town of Maierato Calabria, Italy, Vincenzo Pietropaolo emigrated to Canada with his family in 1963. A self-taught photographer, Pietropaolo began his work in 1968, with his focus on using photography as a means of social commentary. In particular, his earlier work concerned the everyday life of the large Italian Canadian community in Toronto ("Little Italy") his photographs capturing Italian Canadians at work (i.e. Construction workers, bakers etc.), enjoying festivities at the CHIN International picnic, and observing the annual Good Friday Procession.
As Pietropaolo's career progressed he had an increased role as a documentary photographer and continued to take on projects with a social premise. Some of the projects include "Harvest Pilgrams" depicting migrant workers from Mexico and the Caribbean working on fruit and vegetable and tobacco farms to photo essays on South Asian Women and Pope John Paul's historic visit to Toronto. Pietropaolo's work has also appeared in various magazines, for instance, Photo Communique, Ovo Magazine, and Perspectives as well as books such as Spadina Avenue and The Italian-Canadian.
For 17 years Pietropaolo balanced both a career in photography and a career in city planning for the city of Toronto. But, in 1992 he left his job of 17 years to pursue a full-time career in photography.
Pietropaolo has published some of these photographs in Canada at Work/Canadiens au Travail (CAW 2000), as well as in Not Paved with Gold (BTL, 2006) about the Italian community in Toronto, and in Harvest Pilgrims: Mexican and Caribbean Migrant Farm Workers in Canada (BTL, 2009).
Pietropaolo currently resides in Toronto, Ontario.
Works located in: Canada Council Art Bank; Canadian Museum of Contemporary Photography.Source:Private -
