The painting is based on an 1883 canvas by Robert Harris that was destroyed in the 1916 House of Commons fire. Confederation Life commissioned Rex Woods to recreate the Harris painting and it was presented to the nation as a centennial gift., Rex Woods was commissioned, as a Centennial project, by the Confederation Life Association to reproduce Harris' famous work which was destroyed in the 1916 House of Commons fire.Provenance:Additional name(s):Additional information:General note:This work is a colour offset lithograph from a set entitled "Gallery of Canadian History," Portfolio # 1, produced by Confederation Life Association. Rex Woods was one of several painters commissioned by Confederation Life to produce works documenting pivotal moments in the development of Canada. A number of these paintings appeared on calendars issued by Confederation Life, as well as being reproduced as offset lithographs for a Centennial project entitled, "Canadian Historical Prints from the Confederation Life Collection."
