Hopkins, Len (Harold George), 1910-1986 : Bandleader and saxophonist Len (Harold George) Hopkins was born in 1910 in St Thomas, Ontario. Following his musical apprenticeship in London, Ontario, with Professor [Pasquale?] Venuti and bandleader Guy Lombardo, Hopkins studied physical education in 1931 at the Young Men's Christian Association in Chicago, United States of America, in order to obtain a teaching diploma. Hopkins' musical career began in 1935 when a dance band he formed with student friends won a competition to perform at a ballroom in Port Stanley, Ontario. The band played throughout southwestern Ontario until 1938, when they began a 17-year seasonal (October to May) engagement at Ottawa's Chateau Laurier hotel, most often billed as Len Hopkins and His Mellow Music. During the summer months, the band toured Canada, including four summers in the Rockies (including Jasper Park Lodge, where they accompanied the American vocalist Bing Crosby). The orchestra was also featured on numerous radio stations during this period. Following his departure from Ottawa in 1955, Hopkins became musical director at the radio station CKNW in New Westminster, British Columbia. In the spectrum of dance band styles, ranging from swinging to sweet, Hopkins' music was decidedly on the sweet side, like that of his early mentor Guy Lombardo. Directed primarily to a middle-aged audience, Hopkins featured sentimental songs with a moderate tempo, suitable for ballroom dancing. Hopkins died in December 1986.
