P., 1935-2016 : W.P. Kinsella was born in 1935, 60 miles west of Edmonton, Alberta. Kinsella worked in the business world for 20 years before earning his B.A. in creative writing from the University of Victoria (1974) and a M.F.A. from the University of Iowa's Writer's Workshop (1978). From 1978 until 1983, Kinsella taught creative writing and modern literature at the University of Calgary. In this period he began to write seriously, an activity which he continued after he moved back to British Columbia in the 1980's. Kinsella's novels occur in two types of settings: stories situated in the world of Native reserves in southern Alberta and baseball-inspired fictions set in the American Midwest. His best-known baseball-inspired novel is "Shoeless Joe Jackson Comes to Iowa" (1980), which was later adapted as the film "Field of Dreams" (1989). Stories with Native characters are included in the collections: "Dance Me Outside" (1977), "The Thrill of the Grass" (1984), and "Brother Frank's Gospel Hour" (1994). Among other awards, Kinsella won the prestigious Houghton-Mifflin Award and the Books in Canada first novel award for "Shoeless Joe", as well as the Stephen Leacock Memorial Medal for Humour in 1987 for "The Fencepost Chronicles". He was made an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1994.
In 1997 Kinsella was struck by a car, suffering a head injury that affected his ability to write. Consequently, after the publication of his baseball novel "Magic Time" in 1998 it was not until 2011 that he released his next novel "Butterfly Winter." In this time he did however release several collections of short stories that he had worked on prior to his accident, including "The Secret of the Northern Lights" (1998), "Baseball Fantastic" (2000), and "Japanese Baseball and Other Stories" (2000). Kinsella also continued to be active in the Canadian literary world, for instance serving as a judge for the Chapters/Books in Canada First Novel Contest. In 2015, he published a compilation of his short stories titled "The Essential W.P. Kinsella." After suffering from complications with diabetes in his later years, W.P. Kinsella passed away in September 2016. Kinsella's final novel "Russian Dolls: Stories from the Breathing Castle" was published posthumously in 2016.Information additionnelle :Note sur la description matérielle :Includes: Photographs, posters, drawings, audio cassettes, videocassettes, 1 audio compact disc, 1 computer disc, and an assortment of objects.Note sur l'étendue originelle :The 1992-09 accession consists of 3.9 m of textual record. - 58 photographs : col.- 11 photographs : b&w.- 3 photographs : negatives.- 2 drawings. - 2 sketches.- 4 cassettes. - 57 objects.
