This series concerns the activities of Jean Chrétien in his capacity as Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs (1968-1974) responsible for aboriginal affairs, northern Canada and national parks, a position Mr. Chrétien took over from the Honourable Arthur Laing, the first to oversee the new Department created in 1966. It also concerns his activities as M.P. for the riding of Saint-Maurice, where he strove to bolster his electoral support by working closely with constituents.

A number of the series' various subject files concern employment and economic issues, in the Saint-Maurice riding as well as in general, due in part to the economic crisis and runaway inflation following the 1973 oil price shock. The creation of national parks, more specifically La Mauricie National Park, is also a major topic, as are the affairs of the Saint-Maurice riding in particular and the Mauricie region in general. Several files concern aboriginal and northern affairs, though these represent only a portion of the documents.

This series consists mainly of correspondence (personal and ministerial), but also includes working papers, reference materials and, to a lesser degree, other document types (see sub-series).

It consists of three sub-series: Annual Coding System's Files, Files from the Classification System in the Minister's Office, and Subject Files.

General note:

The Minister of Indian and Northern Affairs Canada series contains a few records (mostly constituency correspondence) dating from the start of the period when Jean Chrétien was President of the Treasury Board.

Conservation:

The records of this series are in excellent general condition, and robust measures were taken to preserve them: all metal pieces were removed, newspaper clippings were removed and replaced with photocopies, records in a fragile state of preservation were also photocopied, etc. Lastly, records were removed from their original folders and placed in acid-free folders.

Language note:

The records in the series are in French and English.
