Series relates to the writing and publication of Shields' short fiction.

In the third accession: series contains story drafts, typescripts and proofs, as well as clippings and copies of her stories used by Shields in compiling the collection Dressing Up for the Carnival as well as final typescripts, galleys, editorial correspondence, cover samples and publisher's catalogues related to the collection of stories.

In the fourth accession: series contains proofs and cover samples for Dressing Up for the Carnival, as well as drafts of individual stories. Also includes draft fragments for "Segue," included in The Collected Stories (posthumous).

In the fifth accession: series contains typescript for "A Wood" (by A.C. Shields), cover proofs for The Collected Short Stories (Harper Perennial and Random House) and dust jackets for Collected Stories (4th Estate).

Arrangement note:

Certain groups of story typescripts and copies of printed versions and proofs were reviewed by Shields in batches while preparing the story collection Dressing Up for the Carnival.
