Series concerns Shields' non-fiction writing for publication as well as speeches and lectures.

In the third accession, series contains drafts by Shields of speeches and lectures, conference presentations and conference handouts, articles, reviews, and drafts and cover sample for the biography Jane Austen: a Life (often under the working title Jane Austen at a Glance) as well as collaboration on an exhibition at the Glenbow. Includes an early essay about Austen used when writing the biography.

In the fourth accession, series contains drafts of Shields' speeches and articles as well as her reviews of works by other writers. Included are the manuscripts, proofs and cover samples for Shields' biography, Jane Austen. Also includes her introduction to Duet, a single volume of Small Ceremonies and The Box Garden published in Britain.

In the fifth accession: series contains drafts and proofs of Howard and Shields' collected letters A Memoir of a Friendship (provisionally titled The Meaning of Life), Living and Learning a breast cancer patient workbook, a cover for Writers on Writing anthology, The Staircase Letters (Motyer and Gerwin's letters with Shields) typescript, a review and an article on teaching writing (published posthumously). Also includes a copy of Shields' thesis on Susanna Moodie.
