The Health Protection Branch carries out a wide range of activities intended to protect Canadians from hazards that may contribute to untimely illness or death. In addition to efforts to safeguard the nutritional quality of foods, ensure drug quality, and control dangerous drugs, the branch's other responsibilities include environmental protection, radioactivity monitoring, as well as a continuing program to trace the incidence of communicable and non-communicable diseases in Canada.

The records in this accession include general administration files of the Branch, minutes of various internal associations and committees, as well as studies and surveys conducted on such topics as cancer, rabies, and poison control. Also included are 15 binders of minutes of the Dominion Council of Health dating from 1943 to 1972.
