Legislative Research Branch (formerly Legislation Branch) had responsibility for planning legislation that the Department of Labour might want to bring before Parliament and for working out the consequences for the department of legislation that had been passed. By 1984, as a result of various departmental reorganizations, the Legislative Research Branch had become the Legislative Analysis and Research Division within the Economics and Industrial Relations Branch. In addition to its research on labour legislation this division was also publishing a number of publications for the department, including "Legislative Review" and a monthly "Index to Labour Legislation".
These are central registry files which document the Legislative Research Branch's work on industrial relations, labour standards and human rights among other important topics. Also included are files on labour legislation in the various provinces of Canada. Most of the material dates from the 1960's and 1970's.
