Owen Michael Meehan joined the CHS in 1930, spending his first four years with Hydrographic Shore and Ship parties working on the Upper St. Lawrence River, Lake Winnipeg, Hudson Strait and the Gulf of St. Lawrence. In 1935 he joined the Tidal and Current Survey Division of the CHS and worked in the Lower St. Lawrence. In 1948 he was reassigned to hydrographic work under the supervision of F.C.G. Smith, the Superintendent of Charts.

In his later years, Meehan began an intensive study of the history of the CHS and published many articles in the CHS in-house publication called "Soundings"; in the 1960s he also served as the editor of "Soundings".
Accession consists of files created by OM Meehan during his career with the Canadian Hydrographic Service. Included are various files related to Meehan's research notes and manuscripts for a history of the Service.
